What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession, which specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints. Chiropractors use their hands to adjust the joints of your spine and limbs where signs of restriction in movement are found, improving mobility and relieving pain.
Even though the first thing that may spring to mind is that ‘chiropractors treat backs’ – which they certainly do very successfully – today’s chiropractors are trained to examine and diagnose other musculoskeletal disorders as well as a number of other conditions.
By restoring normal function to the musculoskeletal system where possible, chiropractors can play a major part in relieving discomfort, and any accompanying pain arising from accidents, stress, lack of exercise, poor posture and the everyday wear and tear that happens to all of us.
Why chiropractic for sport?
McTimoney chiropractors have been involved in the treatment of sports people and sports-related injuries since the beginning of the profession.
The spine and joints of the body are very much involved in every athletic movement, and a good aligned spine is closely related to functional strength and efficient movement.
A McTimoney Chiropractor, whenever they assess you, will assess the whole body because McTimoney Chiropractic is a whole body treatment, therefore they will check that your spine and all your joints are aligned as appropriate which reduces the risk of future injuries.
How often would a sportsperson need to visit a McTimoney Chiropractor?
McTimoney Chiropractic is aimed at all levels of athlete and how often a person needs to visit is uniquely dependant on the individual. Things to consider are whether the treatment is about prehabilitation or rehabilitation. That is, are we looking at preventing or treating a problem? Other things to consider are age, fitness, and competition level.
